Alloway Auld Kirk is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and Category A listed ruined church, the associated graveyard is Category B listed. The Kirk and graveyard are best known as the setting for Robert Burns’ poem Tam O’Shanter.
During 2003 the bell and bellcote were removed due to concerns over their structural stability. Long term weathering had left the stonework of the Old Kirk and its surrounding graveyard in poor condition. As part of the ongoing, grant funded, conservation and repair project, these have been reinstated and the walls of the Kirk stabilised. Work included a careful restoration of the historic fabric by indenting severely eroded stonework and extensive repointing.
Paths to the graveyard were relayed and gravestones stabilised in consultation with specialist archaeologists.
The project received HS/HLF grants.
Work was complete for the Homecoming celebrations and opened by the First Minister for Scotland.
